Anna Vasilevskaya, a Ukrainian model and actress, was forced to leave her motherland and career behind and redefine herself in a completely new culture. Thanks to her open heart, resilience, and social skills, she’s now working to help her country and exploring new exciting professional offers.
Anna, tell us about your move to Switzerland, how long have you lived here?

I’ve been to Switzerland a few times as a tourist, but after the full-scale war in Ukraine started, I moved to Switzerland long-term. I’ve been here for a year and a half now.

What impressed you most about this country?

The most amazing thing about Switzerland is the nature. I live in the Italian part, and in my opinion, it is so beautiful that no photo or image can convey the true bliss of being here. Each canton is beautiful in its own way, with different colors of lakes and incredible mountains. Here, we are especially keen on hiking in the mountains. The experience is indescribable and it’s something we are delighted with at every climb. I was also pleasantly surprised by the mentality of the people; everyone is very nice and respectful.

How is your career developing now?
At first, I was a little confused and frustrated because my profile didn’t match the work here – modeling, acting, and blogging. You need to understand the specifics of the place. But giving up is not in my rules, and I decided to figure it all out gradually: first, to provide my family with security, then to learn the rules, language, and mentality of the place where I live, and to help my country. So, I went to work for an association that helps Ukrainians. I worked in the organization of Ukrainian Culture Days in Switzerland, where Ukrainian artists, designers, and volunteers took part. So, I got acquainted with many local media, was invited to a few interviews, then got a role in a calendar shoot, and eventually secured a small role in a movie. To date, I am gradually getting back to work in my field.

You live in the Swiss canton of Ticino, share your impressions. What makes it unique?
For me, Ticino combines the charm of Italy with the discipline of Switzerland. I feel great here, like a Ukrainian-Swiss Monica Bellucci. It’s sunny most days of the year, and the stress I was under when I came here is no longer overwhelming.

What, in your opinion, is common in the culture and traditions of Switzerland and Ukraine? What are the differences?
I immediately noticed that the Swiss are very calm, while Ukrainians are often fussy and anxious, sometimes, rushing ahead much faster. I think this is due to the fact that we are used to surviving in a competitive environment and are never sure about tomorrow. I also noticed that the Swiss have well-defined boundaries. They know what they do, how much, and where, and they adhere to these rules. They won’t take on more obligations than necessary. In contrast, back in Ukraine, we tend to juggle everything at once. Among the shared qualities, I would mention kindness, an open heart, and unity for a good cause. The Swiss welcomed us and provided help, just as they have helped all of Ukraine. Ukrainians are now united for the sake of victory.
